I’ve wanted to have a go at figure painting for ages. Last Christmas (2015) my wife bought me this amazing Young Miniature of one of my favourite movie characters along with the Andrea flesh paint set. I watched a ton of YouTube tutorials and had a good peruse of the Andrea figure painting book before taking the plunge and getting my brushes wet. Gotta say it was nice to get artistic and not have to do any engineering (well only drilling the base), and I hope to do many more!
Special thanks to Dave Younquist for his awesome tutorial videos! Check him out on YouTube – search for LastCavalry.
Kit Manufacturer: Young Miniature
Type: US 2nd Ranger Battalion Normandy 1944 (Cpt John Miller, Saving Private Ryan) – Resin Bust
Extras used: Base – Resin by Model Display Products (purchased from elgrecominiatures.co.uk) with 6mm brass tube bought from eBay.
Paints and colours used: I used a whole variety of colours for this one. The face was done with the Andrea Flesh Paint Set, with Citadel acrylics used for the eyes and hair. The sweat shirt was a custom mix of Citadel and the vest and other bits were done with a variety of Vallejo Model Colors. Gun barrel was Mr Metal Color Iron, and the brass fittings and zip were Mr Metal Color Brass. The stock of the Thompson was layered up using Vallejo smoke over Vallejo burnt umber.
Verdict: I’m no expert on miniatures, but this one was an absolute joy to work with. Beautifully detailed, very little prep work required other than sawing off the casting lugs. The likeness is excellent too. I will definitely be seeking out Young Miniatures in the future.
