V is for Victor…

Here’s part #3 of my latest build log – the amazing 1/72 Handley Page Victor B.Mk.2(BS) from Airfix.

This is a brand new and new-tooled kit which promises to take Airfix’s kit quality to a new level.

Despite some initial reservations, this build is turning out to be a complete joy.

Bambi BB24V Compressor Modification…

Here’s a mod I did to my compressor a while back…

The line pressure gauge that came with the compressor was rated up to the maximum pressure of the compressor, which was something crazy like 200 PSI. So as a result the part of the gauge that you actually use is only 10% of the full range (full scale deflection), making it difficult to tell the difference between 15 PSI and 25 PSI.

So the solution was to buy a replacement gauge from eBay (for about a fiver) with a full scale deflection of 60 PSI. So now 20 PSI is a third of the full range of the gauge and it’s really easy to see where the needle is at airbrush pressures.

Not only that, I also bought some quick fit connectors and some 6mm pneumatic tube and moved the gauge from the compressor to a bracket bolted to the side of my desk.

So now my pressure gauge shows more of the working range for an airbrush, and I can see it easily without having to grovel under the desk.

BTW the compressor I use is a Bambi BB24V. These are mainly used in the dental industry and are practically silent. When it’s on it sounds slightly louder than a fridge compressor, and with the 24 litre tank it sometimes goes for days in between cutting in. These cost heading towards £400 new, but I snagged mine on eBay for £99 in good condition. Often these go for low prices online because people sell them “buyer collects”. So if one crops up in your area for around £100 I’d say snap it up because you won’t find a better modelling compressor.

You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!

9Wasn’t that the storyline for most 70’s action films? Blowing things up in order to get the gold?

Well it works for me, and here’s my rendition of the ultimate safe cracker – Karl-Otto Alberty who played the SS Tiger Tank Commander in the classic film Kelly’s Heroes.

This bust has a brilliant likeness and really captures that Karl-Otto attitude beautifully.

Knock it off with them negative waves!

IMG_7814Woof woof! Here’s my finished rendition of Sgt. Oddball (AKA Donald Sutherland) from the film Kelly’s Heroes.

Absolutely loved every minute of this one, a lovely sculpt and cast and brilliantly detailed!

I’ve still got a bust of Karl Otto Alberty to paint (the Tiger Commander from Kelly’s Heroes) so will probably do him next.

Vorsprung Durch Crapkit

4Yep, this recently re-popped 1/25 Mk.1 Volkswagen Scirocco by AMT is an absolute dog of a kit.

More so because it cost me a whopping £35 inc delivery. If the kit was £9.99 + delivery, I’d have merely been disappointed with it, but for the same price you can pick up a 1/48 Hasegawa F-14A kit it’s a bit of a disgrace.

Ok, so it’s a 40 year old kit – it’s going to be a bit “old skool”. But seriously, this is one of those rare builds that I really didn’t enjoy.

Anyway, enough of me whining – click here to see the final reveal photos

Czech Air Force Mi-24 Hind Alien Tiger (Tiger Meet 2016)

Well I reckon I’ve probably bitten off more than I can chew this time, but I’ve decided to have a crack at airbrushing / hand brushing the Czech Air Force (221 Squadron) “Alien Tiger” MI-24.

I’m basing the build on the Revell 1/48 Hind kit. I was tempted to go for the Trumpeter 1/35 Hind which would be easier to paint (as it’s huge) but the 1/48 kit is more my size.

So far I’ve been cracking on with getting the interior done so I can close her up ready for the fun bit!

Have got the CMK/Czech Master Kits CMK4081 resin kit on order which will convert the exterior to the Mi-24V spec including a tail boom extension, updated wings and other go fast goodies.

I won’t be doing a full build log for this one as I really need to play it by ear as I go, but will post updates here as and when I have some progress.

Wish me luck 😉

Anders Lassen – A True Modern Day Viking!

I got this beautifully sculpted and cast bust through the post today – Major Anders Lassen by Hugo Pereirea of RP Models Portugal – http://rpmodels.pt/shop/index.php?

I’d just finished reading “Churchill’s Secret Warriors” which is the true story of the British Commandos that formed the SSRF (Small Scale Raiding Force). Basically the SSRF were state funded pirates who’s mandate from Downing Street was to “Set the Meditteranean ablaze!” (and don’t get caught). And this they did, leading unbelievably risky missions to steal ships and destroy enemy air bases. Possibly the most amazing member of this team was the young (early 20’s) Anders Lassen – a Dane and a true modern day Viking. Reading about his exploits makes James Bond sound like a dinner lady, no wonder he was awarded the Military Cross with two bars and a Victoria Cross by the time he was 23 years old.

Anyway, the book is a gripping read if you’re into SBS/SAS books, or have a general interest in WW2 history – definitely worth grabbing a copy!

After reading the book I did a search to see if there happened to be any figures of Lassen, and would you believe it – this one is hot off the press as a 1/9 scale bust (and also as a full figure in 75mm and 1/35 scale). I contacted Hugo at RP Models and next thing this beauty was winging it’s way to my door.

Numbered 30 in a limited edition run of 200, this is a brilliantly sculpted bust, the arms fit the body perfectly so no filler will be required there. There are a few minor seams here and there (as you’d expect) but they will be really easy to tidy up and it’ll take no time from fettling to painting. Texturing is very nice too with the fabric being nicely textured. The additional parts (Thompson Machine Gun, Fairburn Sykes Dagger and Binoculares) are also really nicely done.

I’ve got a bit of a build backlog at the mo, so I won’t be getting onto this one any time soon, but he’s going to take pride of place in the stash and will be near the front of the queue.

Top Gun F-14A Build Log Update #4

18I haven’t managed to get a whole load of bench time recently due to pressures of work and all that, but here’s build log update #4.

In this one I mainly focus on getting the intake assemblies worked out and up to scratch, as well as doing more work on building the fuselage assembly.

I’m writing cheques for decal sets that my body can’t afford to cash!

1That’s right – it’s time to do another Top Gun F-14A Tomcat build.

But this time with proper Top Gun decals and a nice meaty 1/48 scale.

For this one I managed to get hold of the Fightertown 1/48 Top Gun decal set which contains decals for all of the aircraft used in the movie.

Lt. Col John Frost – work in progress update #4

21Things have been progressing nicely with the John Frost bust – despite an unexpected strip it off and start again session.

In this update I get to painting the hair and the beret.

Pre-shading and glazing is definitely a great technique for achieving subtle shading effects in a short space of time. It doesn’t work on it’s own though, you still need to enhance the lighting with shadows and lights, but it means you need to spend less time on the shadows and lights, and have more time for other things.
